Welcome to The Hoosier Prospector Website !
Fall in Indiana is here again and for me that means Prospecting. Summertime prospectors have to contend with low water levels, snakes and bugs. I personally prefer to get out in the cooler months. Hope to see you there too!! Prospecting is fun for the whole family. My wife and I enjoy our outings and you will too.
The Hoosier Prospector is an educational website by Jeff Bryant. I have been prospecting since 2000. I really enjoy it. Although I have been taking it more seriously in recent months. Check back often for updates and new developments. I am currently trying to get back to a productive bedrock pocket in Morgan-Monroe State Forest. I found 2 grams the first day there and I believe that there's more!!! |
There is a lot gold to be found in Indiana streams and creek, if you know where to look. Bench gravels are a good place to look. They are deposits of minerals where a creek, river, or stream once ran. Another good place to look is behind rocks and boulders. You look for places where the water pressure weakens. Gold is heavy and will drop out in low pressure areas. An example of a high pressure area is quick moving water like in rapids. Low Pressure is the area right after the rapids.
Another good place I have had luck with is on the high banks where the creek or stream may have once run. So check the banks, if you find bedrock under the topsoil you'll likely find gravels on the bedrock or with it!
Good Luck!

Hello Prospectors,
I'm Jeff Bryant and I own this site. I have met some of you but look forward to meeting more folks who are like-minded. I'm sitting here in front of the wood stove keeping warm this morning, it's -1 degrees out there. Having some coffee and thinking of things to build to better my gold prospecting and gold recovery.
I have a diagram from an 1879 Rocker Box. I have some scrap wood and I'm thinking of putting one together. I'll let you know how it turns out. Maybe I'll build a couple if it works good. Planning some modifications over the original plan. I think it'll be a beauty.
I have thought of using Miner's Moss in place of the carpet on the catch tray. And adding a second punch plate to create a low pressure zone just above the bottom of the box. I have the materials needed...I just need to warm up the shop and get busy. You can see Photos of my Project in the Photo Gallery.
